This project is located on a former PG&E industrial site within Emeryville’s historical industrial district. Rather than treating the existing buildings as constraints to be replaced, the project approaches them as a productive architectural ground. It explores how different attitudes of reuse can generate new spatial relationships and capacities over time

Responding to the existing conditions, the design introduces three distinct architectural interventions. First, the Garden employs a light touch by opening its climatic envelope to create a porous, exterior-like space that supports quiet, informal activities such as resting or gardening. The second approach relies on insertion; new spatial frameworks are introduced into the preserved industrial volume of the Arch Building to accommodate shared activities like workshops and exhibitions. Finally, a Bridge Building acts as a spatial mediator. Suspended between the existing structures, it fosters informal encounters and connects the site through a continuous second-level circulation system.

At its core, the project shifts from predetermined functions to the construction of differentiated spatial conditions. Instead of a neutral container for unlimited flexibility, it constructs a framework of qualities—ranging from bright and dark to enclosed and exposed. By imbuing each area with specific architectural character, the architecture creates specific capacities that support diverse types of human occupation over time.
